In 1959, The Dave Brubeck Quartet changed jazz forever. Until then, most all jazz, as well as most all modern music, was written in the traditional 4/4 time signature. That year, they released “Time Out,” an album based completely in odd time signatures.

The record label did little to market the album. They assumed it wouldn’t resonate with audiences. It was too different.

Much to their surprise, the album spread like wildfire. “Time Out” went platinum and became a jazz standard. The lead single, “Take Five,” written in 5/4 (five/four) time, went on to be the best selling jazz single ever.

five/four was created with that spirit in mind.
